The concept of a creative philosophy is not something that is new to me. I have heard many artists speak about their philosophy and process. What is new for me, however, is developing my own creative philosophy. I have created in the past and now thinking about my own creative philosophy (and process) or lack there of it seems as if all of that creation was unintentional, without purpose, and possibly even lacking in some critical areas.
Sitting down for an hour or so I began to think about developing and putting into words my own creative philosophy. It took me a considerable amount of pondering, sketching, and spitballing before I was able to distill it down into four tenets:
-
Make to explore new media and processes.
-
Start a conversation.
-
Find more why.
-
Get outside.
Now that I have produced a work with this philosophy as a foundation I’ve discovered a few things: it helps to have a purpose for your art, trying out new technologies and processes is half the fun, finding more why and context behind the piece can be difficult and sometimes it’s ok just to make something without knowing why and let the audience find the meaning in the work, getting outside (in nature) is both calming and inspiring, and getting outside can also mean getting outside my comfort zone (something that I strive for continuously).
Heading into another project I plan on keepin this philosophy and what I have learned in mind so that I’ll be better able to produce and also have the intention to continually iterate these tenets so that they get to the point where they are inextricably linked to my creative praxis and the works that come out of that.
